Bhubaneswar, July 20 (NationPress) The Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania visited the site of a tragic incident in the Balanga region of Puri district where unidentified attackers allegedly set a 15-year-old girl ablaze on Saturday.

DGP Khurania also met with the victim's family at their home.

He engaged with the individual who saved the girl and transported her to a local medical facility on that day.

During a media briefing, Khurania remarked, “Police were quick to arrive at the scene and launched an investigation. Today, we have dispatched two specialized teams - one from the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) and another from the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar - to examine the site.”

“They meticulously inspected the crime scene and gathered physical evidence. Our investigation is ongoing. We have obtained some leads and are working to gather additional information. This investigation is at a critical phase, and we will soon disclose the details of the incident,” he added.

The local police have escalated their inquiry into the case, interrogating several individuals, including the victim’s relatives, on Sunday.

In a related development, members of the opposition Biju Janata Dal staged a protest outside the Balanga police station, demanding swift action against the absconding suspects.

A confrontation occurred between BJD activists and police as they attempted to enter the police station. It is important to note that the minor girl was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants near a riverbank under the jurisdiction of the Balanga police station.

According to a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, Mahmuda Bibi from Nuagopalpur village, the girl was reportedly approached by miscreants who poured petrol and kerosene on her in a ruthless attempt to kill her.

Fortunately, she escaped and sought help at a nearby home. Local residents acted quickly, taking the girl to the Pipili Community Health Centre before she was transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar due to the extent of her burn injuries.

This horrific attack, which occurred on July 19, has prompted urgent police action, including the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
