Bhubaneswar, Aug 17 (NationPress) A heated debate emerged on Sunday after an alleged video featuring the 16-year-old victim, who was tragically set ablaze in the Balanga region of Puri district on July 19, and subsequently passed away following a 14-day struggle for survival at AIIMS, New Delhi, began to circulate across social media.
In a statement to the press, BJD leader Lenin Mohanty urged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who oversees the home department, along with the Odisha police, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the video and apprehend those accountable in this grievous matter. In the purported viral recording, the victim alleged that three assailants, obscured by napkins, approached on a motorcycle and ignited her after dousing her in kerosene on July 19.
Mohanty questioned the statement released by the Odisha Police via its official X account following the victim’s passing on August 2, in which it dismissed any involvement of individuals in the incident. He pointed out that the girl’s claims surfaced in the viral footage just 15 days after her death, leaving many astonished.
He inquired about the motivations behind recording the victim’s testimony three different times. Additionally, Mohanty accused Pinak Mishra, the Superintendent of Police for Puri district, of treating this grave issue with a lack of seriousness. The BJD has alleged that both the state government and Odisha Police are attempting to protect those responsible for this tragic event.
Puri SP Mishra confirmed that the district police, with the help of the Cyber Team from the Odisha Crime Branch, have initiated an investigation to ascertain the legitimacy of the viral video and to track down the individual who disseminated this sensitive content involving a minor on social media. He also speculated that the viral footage may be part of the original video recorded during her treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.
Mishra further mentioned that the victim’s final statement had been documented at AIIMS, New Delhi, in the presence of a magistrate. He apprised journalists that the investigation is nearing completion, and the police are set to present their final report to the court shortly.
