Do Painful Memories of 2025 Haunt Us? Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Speaks
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Jan 2 (NationPress) The prominent spiritual leader and chief cleric of Kashmir, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, remarked on Friday that his convictions remain steadfast despite alleging that the authorities have placed him under house arrest. He stated that the troubling memories of 2025 continue to linger as the new year unfolds.
Utilizing the social media platform 'X', Mirwaiz Umar articulated his thoughts, stating he should have been addressing the Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid, but due to his house arrest, he was compelled to share his insights online.
“I meet you on the first Friday of the year not in Jama Masjid, as the Mirwaiz should, but on social media, as I have once again been put under arrest!”
“As we usher in another year, the painful memories of 2025 stay with us. It was a year overshadowed by tragedy and uncertainty, especially following the horrific Pahalgam attack that deeply affected our community.
“This incident was universally condemned in the valley, leading to significant anxiety among the people. It was also a year marked by another India–Pakistan war, serving as a stark reminder of the fragile peace that persists in the region.
“The year concluded with another tragedy — a major blast and loss of life in New Delhi.
“Additionally, the year saw the banning of the Awami Action Committee — a socio-political organization that provided vital support to the community, advocating for peace, dialogue, and resolution — alongside Ittihadul Muslimeen, both integral to the Hurriyat Conference.
“There is no available public space for us, and communication channels, including most local media, are unwilling to provide a platform for expressing the people's demands or viewpoints. I lack the opportunity to hold press conferences.
“My movements require official clearance, and individuals cannot meet me without prior permission. Access to the pulpit of Jama Masjid — the spiritual heart of Kashmir — is also restricted.
“With the banning of Hurriyat constituents, all offices sealed, and many institutions closed, leaders and activists are either imprisoned or under constant surveillance. Social media remains the sole platform that allows some voice and connection with the people and the outside world.
“Let me clarify, my beliefs and convictions have not shifted — not even by a comma. Some criticize this stance as a compromise. To them, I say, how and for what? They present a peculiar argument — for being granted security.
“But I have had security since the day of my father's martyrdom 35 years ago. If I did not compromise for it then, why would I do so now?” the Mirwaiz concluded in his extensive commentary.
