Aizawl/Imphal, May 5 (NationPress) The Mizoram Police have conducted a significant operation, seizing drugs worth approximately Rs 30.72 crore in the Champhai district, located near the Myanmar border, and apprehending two individuals, as reported by officials on Monday.
A police spokesperson revealed that more than two crore highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, weighing 236.33 kg, were confiscated late Sunday night in Vanzau village within Champhai district.
Following specific intelligence, the police intercepted a vehicle en route from Thinghrangkawn to Bungzung, both border villages in Champhai.
“Upon conducting detailed searches, the drugs were discovered inside the vehicle. The arrested individuals, identified as Laltanpuia (30) and Vanropuia (27), are both residents of Champhai town,” the spokesperson stated.
A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
According to officials, the drugs were smuggled from Myanmar and were intended for distribution within India or internationally, particularly in major cities and global markets where the demand for methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets, is escalating.
In a separate incident, security forces in Manipur's Churachandpur district seized around 1.3 kg of heroin.
A police official in Imphal reported that acting on a tip-off, troops from the Assam Rifles and local police intercepted a vehicle and discovered the heroin concealed within 108 soap cases.
One individual, identified as Letminthang, 29, from Chehjang village in Chandel district, was detained.
Authorities suspect the drugs were being transported from Myanmar to Assam's Silchar through Churachandpur.
