Aizawl, Jan 29 (NationPress) In a collaborative operation, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police have confiscated heroin and highly addictive Methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs 7.64 crore, and have detained a drug smuggler, according to officials on Wednesday.
A Defence spokesperson reported that troopers from the Assam Rifles and personnel from the Mizoram Police arrested a drug peddler in Zokhawthar located in the Champhai district, where a significant quantity of heroin and Methamphetamine tablets weighing 2.276 kg was recovered on Tuesday night.
The detained drug peddler has been identified as Lalruatzauva (34), a resident of the Champhai district, which borders Myanmar.
The entire drug shipment and the individual have been taken into custody by the Zokhawthar Police Department for further investigation and legal actions.
A police official indicated that the drugs were smuggled in from Myanmar.
“The ongoing smuggling of contraband is a significant concern for both the state of Mizoram and India. The Assam Rifles are intensifying their efforts to combat illegal smuggling and are also increasing efforts to apprehend the masterminds behind these operations,” stated an official announcement.
On January 24, the Assam Rifles, along with officials from the Excise and Narcotics Department, seized heroin valued at Rs 35.51 crore in the same Champhai district, leading to the arrest of two individuals.
Despite six districts in Mizoram—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip—sharing a 510 km long unfenced border with Myanmar's Chin state, the mountainous Champhai district has emerged as a hotspot for smuggling various drugs, arms, and other illicit goods.
Numerous drugs, especially heroin and highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, are frequently smuggled into the northeastern states of India from Myanmar, which shares a 1,643 km long unfenced border with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km).
