Prime Minister Narendra Modi will distribute more than 51,000 appointment letters to newly recruited youth across government departments and organisations at the 19th Rozgar Mela on Saturday, 23 May. The letters will be handed out via video-conferencing, with Modi also addressing the gathering — continuing what has become one of the government's flagship employment outreach programmes.

Scale and Reach of the 19th Edition

The event will be held simultaneously at 47 locations across India, with newly selected candidates drawn from all parts of the country. Recruits will be joining ministries and departments including the Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Financial Services, and Department of Higher Education, among others.

Since the Rozgar Mela's launch, a cumulative 12 lakh recruitment letters have been issued through the first 18 editions organised across the country — a figure the government cites as evidence of the initiative's scale.

What the Government Has Said

At the 18th Rozgar Mela held in January, Modi emphasised that connecting youth with skills and providing employment and self-employment opportunities remain the government's core priority. He described the Rozgar Mela as having been 'launched to bring government recruitments into mission mode' and said it had since 'become an institution.'

'India today is among the youngest nations in the world, and the government is consistently striving to create new opportunities for the youth both domestically and globally,' Modi said on that occasion.

Broader Employment Push

Modi has pointed to several parallel employment drivers: trade and mobility agreements with multiple countries opening pathways for young Indians abroad; unprecedented infrastructure investment generating construction-sector jobs; and a rapidly expanding startup ecosystem. According to the Prime Minister, India now has nearly two lakh registered startups employing more than 21 lakh youth.

He has also highlighted the Digital India initiative as a catalyst, with India emerging as a global hub in animation, digital media, and allied sectors — creating what he called 'a new economy.'

Context and Significance

The Rozgar Mela was conceived as a mechanism to accelerate the notoriously slow pace of government hiring, compressing timelines between selection and actual appointment. Critics have noted that the pace of formal public-sector job creation remains a fraction of India's annual labour-market entrants — estimated at roughly one crore per year — making symbolic milestones like the 12-lakh cumulative figure a contested metric. Nonetheless, for the candidates receiving letters today, the event represents a direct, verifiable employment outcome from a centralised government initiative.
