PM Modi launches ₹1.06 lakh crore projects in Rajasthan, Gujarat on 5 July
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5 July 2025 embarked on a day-long tour of Rajasthan and Gujarat to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for a sweeping set of infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹1.06 lakh crore, spanning aviation, urban transit, energy, and semiconductors. The visits mark one of the single largest project launches of his current term.
Key Developments in Rajasthan
The Prime Minister's first stop was Jodhpur, where he inaugurated the new terminal building at Jodhpur Airport and launched a revised aviation scheme at around 10:45 am IST. He then travelled to Balotra, arriving around 12:00 pm IST, to dedicate, inaugurate, and lay foundation stones for development projects aggregating to roughly ₹1.06 lakh crore, followed by a public address.
At the inauguration ceremony of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Refinery at Pachpadra in Balotra, Modi also laid the foundation stone for the Jaipur Metro Rail Project Phase-2, according to government officials.
Jaipur Metro Phase-2: What It Covers
The ₹13,037-crore metro expansion will develop a 41-km North-South corridor running from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, with 36 stations along the route. The corridor is designed to connect key nodes including Sitapura Industrial Area, Vishwakarma Industrial Area (VKIA), Jaipur International Airport, Sawai Man Singh Hospital, Sawai Man Singh Stadium, the Collectorate, Jaipur Railway Station, Ambabari, and Vidyadhar Nagar.
The project will be executed by the Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Union government and the Rajasthan state government. Officials say the corridor is expected to significantly improve urban mobility by linking Jaipur's industrial hubs with its residential and commercial centres.
India's First Semiconductor Plant Inaugurated in Gujarat
After completing his Rajasthan engagements, Modi flew to Sanand, Ahmedabad, arriving at approximately 4:30 pm IST, to inaugurate the CG Semi Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) plant — one of India's first semiconductor assembly and testing facilities. The inauguration marks the commencement of commercial production at the facility, developed under the India Semiconductor Mission.
The CG Semi OSAT plant was built with an investment of more than ₹7,500 crore and is among the first four semiconductor projects approved under the Mission. The facility offers end-to-end services including wafer sorting, assembly, testing, package design, failure analysis, test programme development, product characterisation, and logistics support.
Broader Significance
This comes amid India's accelerating push to establish a domestic semiconductor ecosystem, a strategic priority the Centre has backed with significant financial incentives. Notably, the Sanand facility's inauguration signals a shift from policy commitment to operational reality in chip manufacturing — a milestone India has long targeted. The Jaipur Metro expansion, meanwhile, reflects continued Centre-state co-investment in urban infrastructure at a time when Tier-1 cities are grappling with rising mobility demand. Together, the day's launches represent a concentrated political and economic statement ahead of upcoming state cycles.
