Key Takeaways

  • PM Modi sees a strong link between science and spirituality.
  • Srinivasa Ramanujan's legacy is a national pride.
  • Spiritual discipline is key to creativity.
  • Knowledge surpasses mere information.
  • National Mathematics Day honors Ramanujan's contributions.

New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Sunday that there exists a profound connection between science and spirituality, while he cherished the legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan, a figure widely regarded as one of the most exceptional mathematicians ever.

During a conversation with American podcaster Lex Fridman, an engineer with a passion for mathematics, the Prime Minister expressed his deep respect for Ramanujan.

"Everyone in my nation holds him in high regard as well, because I firmly believe there’s a significant link between science and spirituality. If you examine many minds that excel in science, you will often discover they are spiritually enlightened too," PM Modi remarked.

He emphasized that they are not separated from spirituality. Ramanujan once mentioned that his mathematical insights were bestowed upon him by the goddess he revered, indicating that ideas arise from spiritual discipline, which transcends mere diligence.

"It signifies fully committing yourself to a pursuit and diving so deeply into it that you become one with your craft," PM Modi explained.

He further noted that the greater our willingness to explore diverse avenues of knowledge, the more innovative ideas we can generate.

"It’s vital for us to discern the distinction between information and knowledge. Some individuals erroneously equate information with knowledge, amassing vast amounts of data, yet I contend that information alone does not equate to knowledge," the Prime Minister stated.

"Knowledge is a deeper concept, cultivated through processing, contemplation, and comprehension. Acknowledging this distinction is crucial in how we manage both," he added.

National Mathematics Day is celebrated annually on December 22 to commemorate the brilliance of Ramanujan.

Born on December 22, 1887, in Erode district, Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan was one of the youngest members of Britain’s Royal Society and the first Indian to become a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge University.

His extensive contributions to mathematical analysis, infinite series, continued fractions, and number theory are unparalleled. He is especially renowned for his work in the analytical theory of numbers, elliptic functions, continued fractions, and infinite series.
