PM Modi inaugurates Bharat Bovine Breeding Centre in Banaskantha, Gujarat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 30 October 2026 inaugurated the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre (BBBRC) at Bhildi in Gujarat's Banaskantha district, marking a significant push to modernise India's dairy sector through advanced reproductive technologies. The Prime Minister also visited the Embryo Transfer Technology-In Vitro Fertilisation (ET-IVF) Laboratory on site and interacted with women dairy farmers, discussing challenges in animal husbandry and dairy farming.
What the BBBRC Is and Why It Matters
Spread across 127 acres, the BBBRC has been established as an advanced Centre of Excellence for bovine breeding, genetic improvement and cutting-edge reproductive technologies. Crucially, it is the country's first facility dedicated exclusively to the Kankrej cattle breed, an indigenous breed native to Gujarat. According to the Prime Minister's Office, the centre is expected to accelerate breed improvement by 10 to 20 times through the deployment of advanced breeding techniques. Its mandate covers improving milk production per animal, strengthening the genetic quality of cattle, and supporting the conservation of indigenous breeds across India.
Modi's Message to Dairy Farmers
Ahead of the inauguration, the Prime Minister said in a post that the centre would help farmers through higher milk yields, better-quality breeds and increased incomes. He also underlined that the benefits would extend well beyond Gujarat to dairy farmers across the country — a signal that the BBBRC is envisioned as a national resource, not merely a state-level facility.
Part of a ₹14,000 Crore Development Push in Banaskantha
The BBBRC inauguration is one component of a broader cluster of development initiatives worth more than ₹14,000 crore being launched or dedicated to the nation in Banaskantha on Friday. These include the foundation stones for two Bio-CNG plants of Banas Dairy at Tharad and Radhanpur, with cattle dung processing capacities of 75 metric tonnes and 100 metric tonnes per day, respectively — linking the dairy ecosystem to clean energy generation. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to release the 24th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), amounting to approximately ₹19,000 crore. Other projects on the agenda include the flagging off of the Ahmedabad (Sabarmati)-Varanasi Express and Mehsana-Becharaji-Sabarmati MEMU rail services, the extension of Ahmedabad Metro towards the airport and GIFT City, the widening of Ahmedabad-Mehsana Road from four to eight lanes, and the inauguration of 361 completed child-friendly Anganwadi centres alongside the foundation stone for 4,030 new centres.
Wider Gujarat Tour and What Comes Next
The Banaskantha visit forms part of the Prime Minister's two-day Gujarat tour on 30 and 31 October. Later on Friday, Modi is scheduled to travel to Ekta Nagar to inaugurate 'Bharat Parv 2026' and witness the 'Ekta Prakash Parv'. On 31 October, he will participate in Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations marking the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The two-day tour signals a concerted effort to link agricultural, infrastructure and cultural milestones in the run-up to a symbolically significant national occasion.
