Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 21 June 2025 praised the BJP-led Odisha government for two years of accelerated development, unveiling projects worth nearly ₹47,600 crore at an event in Rairangpur, Mayurbhanj district. Addressing the gathering marking Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi's two-year anniversary in office, Modi reaffirmed the Centre's Purvodaya (Rise of Eastern India) policy as the cornerstone of his government's eastern development strategy.

Key Announcements at Rairangpur

The projects unveiled span electricity, roads, railways, healthcare, and education, and are intended to accelerate Odisha's integration into the national growth corridor. Modi said the initiatives would 'bring significant benefits to the people' across these sectors. This is among the largest single-event project launches in the state in recent years.

The Prime Minister also highlighted that investment proposals worth nearly ₹20 lakh crore have been received under campaigns such as Utkarsh Odisha, while mega projects worth over ₹3.5 lakh crore are currently under implementation across the state.

The Purvodaya Vision

'The eastern region of India, which had been reduced to a symbol of backwardness during the Congress era, is now emerging as a gateway to progress,' Modi said, directly targeting the opposition. He framed Odisha's growth as inseparable from India's broader ambition, citing the state's coastline, mineral wealth, agricultural base, and youth population as underleveraged assets.

Modi said coordinated Centre-state efforts are already yielding results: 'Odisha is witnessing record investments in railway infrastructure. New roads and economic corridors are being developed, ports are being expanded, and investments are flowing into sectors such as energy, semiconductors, green energy, and modern industries.'

Double-Engine Government Model

Modi said one of the defining strengths of a 'double-engine government' — where the same party governs at both the Centre and the state — is direct delivery to citizens. He credited Chief Minister Majhi with transforming welfare schemes into tangible improvements in ordinary lives, and described Odisha as 'increasingly emerging as a destination for economic activity, investment, and industrial growth.'

This comes amid a broader BJP push to consolidate its foothold in eastern India, a region that was historically dominated by regional and Congress-aligned parties. Odisha's 2024 assembly election, which brought Majhi to power, marked a significant political shift in the state.

2036 and 2047: Odisha's Twin Milestones

Modi pointed to two upcoming anniversaries as galvanising targets: 2036, when Odisha marks the centenary of its formation, and 2047, when India celebrates 100 years of Independence. 'A stronger Odisha will contribute to a stronger India. I have immense faith in Odisha's potential. Together, we must take Odisha to new heights of development,' he said.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to President Droupadi Murmu on her birthday, noting that 'the daughter of Mayurbhanj district has assumed the highest constitutional post in the country' — a remark that carried symbolic weight given the event's location in her home district.
