Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 19 June extended birthday greetings to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, wishing him good health and a long life. Modi posted the message on social media platform X, marking a rare public gesture of goodwill between the two principal political rivals.

Rahul Gandhi Turns 56

Rahul Gandhi, born on 19 June 1970, turned 56 on Friday. He is the son of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and currently represents the Rae Bareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha.

Academic and Early Career Background

Gandhi's early education took place at St. Columba's School in New Delhi and later at The Doon School in Dehradun. Following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 and the subsequent security concerns for the family, he and his sister, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were educated through homeschooling for a period.

He briefly attended St. Stephen's College at the University of Delhi before moving to the United States to study at Harvard University. After the assassination of his father in 1991, he transferred to Rollins College in Florida, completing his bachelor's degree in 1994. He subsequently earned an M.Phil. in Development Studies from Trinity College, Cambridge University, in 1995.

Gandhi began his professional career with the Monitor Group, a management consulting firm in London. On returning to India, he co-founded Backops Services Private Limited, a technology outsourcing company based in Mumbai.

Political Journey

Gandhi formally entered electoral politics in 2004, winning the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh — a constituency previously held by his father. He was appointed General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in September 2007, overseeing the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI).

He was elevated to Vice President of the Indian National Congress in January 2013, and assumed the party presidency on 16 December 2017. He resigned as Congress president in July 2019 following the party's performance in that year's general elections.

On 9 June 2024, Gandhi was formally designated Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha — his first constitutional position — ending a decade-long vacancy in the role. As LoP, he has emerged as the primary institutional check on the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
