Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 12 (NationPress) Amidst growing reports of police misconduct towards individuals in custody, a family from Adoor in Kerala has decided to take a stand for their son's alleged custodial death.
The kin of DYFI, the youth faction of the CPI(M), leader Joel, who passed away in 2020 following alleged police torture, has pledged to engage in a legal struggle until justice is achieved.
Joel’s father, K.K. Joikutty, accused local CPI(M) leaders of backing police violence against his son, fearing he could reveal party secrets.
He also asserted that the CPI(M)’s assertion that Joel was expelled from the party was “untrue” and stressed that the family would continue their fight until those responsible are held accountable.
Joel, widely known as Nellimukal Kochumukal Joel, was reportedly beaten by the police on January 1, 2020, during the first term of the Pinarayi Vijayan government (2016-21).
He succumbed to his injuries four months later, on May 22.
The family claims the assault was executed under directives from CPI(M) leaders, who allegedly aimed to conceal financial misconduct.
They have accused then Circle Inspector U. Biju and his team of brutally assaulting Joel, leading to severe health issues that ultimately caused his demise.
Joel’s aunt, K.K. Kunjamma, who attempted to intervene, was also reportedly assaulted by police.
Despite lodging complaints with the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief in 2020, the family stated that no action has been taken.
The Congress party has since called for a fresh investigation, labeling the case as “deeply suspicious”.
However, CPI(M) leadership has dismissed the allegations, asserting that Joel died of a heart attack and that the party had no connection to his death.
Joel was initially taken into custody following a dispute regarding a vehicle accident. The subsequent assault allegedly caused serious health complications, necessitating months of treatment.
Family members reported that he suffered from severe issues, including pus and blood in his urine, before passing away on May 22, 2020.
Reiterating their determination, Joel’s family stated they would not rest until justice is served for his death.
As a new session of the Kerala Assembly begins next week, the Congress-led opposition is preparing to address a list of custodial abuses that have occurred under the Vijayan administration.
