Was a 17-Year-Old Filming Reels While Causing a Fatal Crash in Delhi?

Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 17 (NationPress) The grieving mother of a 23-year-old man who tragically died in a car accident in Delhi’s Dwarka on February 3 is demanding justice. She alleges that the 17-year-old driver of the SUV was busy recording social media reels while speeding just moments before the deadly crash.
Sahil Dhaneshra lost his life when a Scorpio, reportedly driven by the minor, collided head-on with his motorcycle near Lal Bahadur Shastri College around noon. The impact also caused a nearby parked cab to crash into another vehicle, leaving its driver with serious injuries.
The accused, who did not have a valid driving license, was arrested and presented before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), which placed him in an observation home. He was later granted interim bail on February 10 to allow him to take his Class 10 board exams.
Speaking with IANS, Sahil’s heartbroken mother, Inna Makan, raised concerns about how the case is being handled and insisted on accountability. “The entire world is questioning the administration, not just me. Recently, a similar tragedy occurred in Janakpuri. Every victim has loved ones – parents, siblings, and friends. The administration should be held responsible,” she stated.
Makan claimed that the minor and his sister were making fun reels while recklessly driving. “On the day of the incident, they were filming reels to showcase their speed. The sister recorded the video and even posted it online,” she asserted.
Expressing her frustration with the ongoing legal proceedings, the mother mentioned that she was informed the case had been moved to the juvenile system, yet the father’s whereabouts remain unknown. “I was told that the case was sent to the juvenile system, but the father’s presence is crucial. He is responsible by law, but he is unaccounted for,” she remarked.
Makan insisted that the driver was so focused on recording his reels that he did not even attempt to brake after the initial impact. The crash resulted in significant damage to the bus and parked cab, causing severe injuries to a taxi driver resting nearby.
According to the Delhi Police, the accused is confirmed to be 17 years old. Initially, there were attempts to charge him as an adult, with his age incorrectly recorded as 19 in the FIR. However, documentation provided later verified his minor status. The minor’s father was detained briefly but later released.
The police confirmed that the father would be included in the chargesheet under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. A case has been filed under Sections 281 (rash driving), 106(1) (causing death by negligence), and 125(a) (acts endangering life).
At the scene, police discovered the Scorpio, motorcycle, and cab in a severely damaged state. Sahil was pronounced dead on-site, while the injured cab driver, identified as Ajit Singh, was taken to IGI Hospital, with further medical evaluation pending.
Recalling the incident, Singh explained, “I parked my car close to the curb to eat, as buses and college vehicles were nearby. Suddenly, a Scorpio sped past, crashing first into the motorcycle, which I saw in my mirror. As I stepped out, it also hit my car, pushing it into a bus ahead.”
He further noted, “People helped me out of my car and took me to the hospital. The doctors informed me that I need three months of bed rest due to fractured ribs and a significant head injury.”
During the investigation, it was confirmed that the Scorpio was indeed driven by the minor, who lacked a valid driving license. All three vehicles involved have been confiscated and are undergoing mechanical inspections, while CCTV footage from the area has been collected as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Police indicated that further investigations are still ongoing.
