New Delhi, Aug 10 (NationPress) An overspeeding SUV tragically took the life of a pedestrian and left another seriously injured on a road adjacent to the highly secure President's Estate in New Delhi, as reported by the police on Sunday.
The driver has been apprehended.
The incident was first reported by a police patrol van at around 6:30 a.m., with authorities stating that the vehicle almost mounted the curb after colliding with two individuals on Mother Teresa Crescent Road near Talkatora Stadium.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla mentioned that they are investigating whether the driver, identified as Ashish, 26, was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
During the interrogation, the driver of the white SUV, which had a UP registration, claimed he was driving from Gurugram to Shakarpur when the accident occurred due to him dozing off.
"We are currently working to identify the victims," stated Mahla.
Forensic teams are gathering evidence from both the vehicle and the accident scene, while glass bottles were found near the driver's seat.
The SUV is registered to Ankit Adnani, a resident of Ahimsa Khand, Ghaziabad. According to the police, the owner had lent the vehicle to Ashish.
The results of the medical examination for the detained driver are pending, the police added.
Authorities mentioned that the deceased was walking along the road when the SUV struck him, resulting in instant death.
The other victim, who is currently receiving treatment for a fracture and other injuries, was also thrown into the air due to the collision, as per an investigator.
The police believe that the incident occurred approximately 30 to 60 minutes before it was discovered by the patrol vehicle.
As a result of the collision, the pavement sustained damage, and the vehicle's wheels were dislodged, according to a police official from the Chanakyapuri Police Station.
