Bhopal, May 10 (NationPress) In a pivotal advancement towards the ambitious Tapti Basin Mega Recharge Project, the state governments of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today in Bhopal.
This agreement will be formalized in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is expected to arrive in Bhopal this afternoon.
After the signing ceremony, both leaders will hold a press conference at 3 p.m. at the Kushabhau Thakre Auditorium.
Described as the world’s largest groundwater recharge initiative, the Tapti Basin Mega Recharge Project aims to resolve long-standing water-sharing conflicts between the two states, ensuring sufficient water availability for both agriculture and industry.
CM Yadav, who has engaged in several discussions with CM Fadnavis in recent months, affirmed that all outstanding issues concerning the project have been addressed, allowing both states to proceed.
As part of the initiative, three streams of the Tapti River will be collaboratively developed to maximize water utilization for irrigation, industrial, and drinking purposes while enhancing inter-state cooperation.
The project will utilize a total of 31.13 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water, with 11.76 TMC designated for Madhya Pradesh and 19.36 TMC for Maharashtra. The construction of the proposed dams and canals will require 3,362 hectares of land in Madhya Pradesh.
Upon completion, the project will establish a permanent irrigation system benefiting 1,23,082 hectares in Madhya Pradesh and 2,34,706 hectares in Maharashtra.
In Madhya Pradesh, four tehsils—Burhanpur, Nepanagar, Khaknar, and Khalwa—situated in Burhanpur and Khandwa districts, will receive direct benefits.
In addition to enhancing irrigation, the project also aims to address drinking water issues in Nagpur (Maharashtra) and meet irrigation needs in Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh).
Importantly, CM Yadav confirmed that no villages will be displaced as a result of this project, eliminating the need for rehabilitation in either state.
