BJP slams Congress 'Kisan Chakkajam' in MP, cites ₹2,800 crore farmer aid

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madhya Pradesh on 7 May launched a coordinated offensive against the Congress party's 'Kisan Chakkajam' agitation, accusing it of misleading farmers, disrupting public life, and serving narrow political interests rather than genuine agrarian concerns.

BJP's Core Charges Against the Protest

BJP Kisan Morcha State President Jaipal Singh Chavda alleged that Congress State President Jitu Patwari was inconveniencing farmers and the general public solely to build his personal political profile. Chavda reminded Congress of its own track record, claiming that under Congress rule, farmers faced police bullets and were charged interest rates as high as 18 per cent.

He warned that road blockades of the kind Congress was organising could disrupt emergency services, calling the protest driven by what he described as selfish motives. He urged the party to engage constructively with the government instead of spreading misinformation.

Government's Record on Farmer Welfare

Chavda highlighted that the BJP government had cleared ₹2,800 crore in farmers' loan dues, raised the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat, and provided bonuses above the MSP. He noted that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav was personally visiting wheat procurement centres and interacting with farmers to address grievances on the ground.

Chavda also pointed to expanded irrigation infrastructure as a driver of a bumper harvest this year, with wheat procurement targets raised from 78 lakh tonnes to nearly 100 lakh tonnes.

BJP Leaders Condemn Protest Across Madhya Pradesh

The BJP's response was not limited to a single spokesperson. Condemnation came from party leaders across the state's divisions. State Minister Tulsiram Silawat spoke out in Indore, Minister Govind Singh Rajput in Sagar, Member of Parliament Vivek Bunty Sahu in Chhindwara, spokesperson Rajendra Bharti in Ujjain, spokesperson Yashpal Singh Sisodia in Mandsaur, MLA Ghanshyam Pironiya in Gwalior, and MLA Neeraj Singh Lodhi in Jabalpur all issued statements condemning the agitation.

Collectively, BJP leaders asserted that the government values every grain produced by farmers and remains committed to safeguarding their interests, while characterising the Congress protest as serving only narrow political ends.
