MP Lokayukta raids tax officer across 3 districts, uncovers ₹3.78 crore assets
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, conducted simultaneous searches across multiple premises linked to a commercial tax officer in Jabalpur, Sagar, and Bhopal, detecting assets and expenditure worth ₹3.78 crore — more than 264% of his known income — in a disproportionate assets case. The officer, Manish Kumar Jain, was serving as an Assistant Commissioner and Commercial Tax Officer posted in Damoh at the time of the action.
How the Investigation Unfolded
Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Anjulata Patle received a complaint alleging that Jain had accumulated assets far beyond his known sources of income. Inspector Brij Mohan Singh Narwaria verified the complaint, and the allegations were found to be prima facie correct. A case was subsequently registered against Jain under Sections 13(1)(b) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018.
Lokayukta Deputy Superintendent of Police Neetu Tripathi said the operation was underway in the three districts. 'He was posted in Jabalpur for a long time,' Tripathi said, adding that searches were being conducted as part of the ongoing investigation.
Properties and Assets Detected
The preliminary investigation identified several properties registered in the names of Jain and his family members across Jabalpur, Bhopal, and Banda town in Sagar district. These include a 278.74-square-metre plot in Jabalpur valued at approximately ₹1.43 crore, and a 116.14-square-metre plot registered in the name of his wife, Nidhi Jain, estimated at ₹95 lakh. Another plot in her name, on which a bungalow has been constructed, was valued at around ₹22.87 lakh.
Searches also revealed a flat in Bhopal and properties in Banda registered in the names of Jain's parents, Shashi Jain and Komal Chand Jain. The family had additionally taken out insurance policies involving an estimated expenditure of ₹33.93 lakh, according to officials.
The Disproportionality Gap
Jain's total known income was calculated at ₹1.03 crore, while the expenditure and assets detected during the investigation so far stood at ₹3.78 crore — making the detected assets 264.64% disproportionate to his declared income. This gap is central to the case under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Notably, disproportionate assets cases of this scale have been a recurring focus of Lokayukta actions in Madhya Pradesh, which has intensified anti-corruption drives against government officers across departments in recent years.
Searches Ongoing
The raid was conducted at Jain's residence in Reliable Developer Colony, Jabalpur, along with other premises linked to him and his family. According to officials, the searches and investigation were still continuing at the time of reporting. Further assets may be identified as the probe advances.
