Chhindwara, Oct 9 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh (LoP), Umang Singhar, has taken a significant step by announcing financial aid for families who tragically lost their children due to a contaminated cough syrup in Chhindwara, Betul, and Pandhurna.
Singhar (51), a tribal leader and Congress MLA representing the Gandhvani Assembly seat in Dhar district, pledged to give Rs 50,000 to each family affected by this heartbreaking incident.
This announcement came shortly after his visit to Parasiya in Chhindwara, where he met several bereaved families who suffered devastating losses from the toxic syrup while seeking treatment.
"I encountered numerous families during my visit to Parasiya. Many impoverished parents have exhausted their resources, selling possessions to afford treatment in private hospitals in Nagpur, leaving them in distress. Their circumstances are dire and heart-wrenching; hence, I aim to extend some financial relief to them. I urge others to join in offering support," Singhar stated.
In an interview with IANS, Singhar mentioned that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has sought collaboration and recommendations from the Opposition.
"I encourage everyone to contribute to aiding the affected families. The government has allocated Rs 4 lakhs to each family, but this is insufficient. Numerous families have incurred expenses exceeding 10 lakhs for treatment, only to lose their children," he emphasized.
Additionally, Singhar assisted Yashin Khan, a Parasiya resident, in reclaiming his auto-rickshaw, which he had sold to cover medical costs for his two-year-old son, who tragically passed away at a Nagpur hospital on September 13.
"I lost my son as a result of the toxic cough syrup. I had to sell my auto-rickshaw to settle the hospital bill, which I shared with Umang Singhar during his visit. Today, he transferred Rs 1.5 lakh to help me retrieve my auto-rickshaw," Khan said in a video message.
Thus far, at least 22 children have died, with five receiving treatment at various hospitals in Nagpur.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Yadav checked on the health of children in several hospitals, including AIIMS in Nagpur.
During his visit, he spoke with the doctors attending to these children and their families, urging them to prioritize saving the children's lives, assuring that the Madhya Pradesh government would provide all necessary support.
"The Madhya Pradesh government stands with the affected families. I have instructed officials to keep a close watch on the children receiving treatment in Nagpur’s hospitals. I obtained comprehensive updates regarding their care," Yadav posted on X along with photographs from his hospital visits.
