M.T. Vasudevan Nair, 91-Year-Old Jnanpith Honoree, in Serious Condition

Kozhikode, Dec 20 (NationPress) The esteemed 91-year-old Jnanpith honoree and a prominent literary figure from Kerala, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, is currently in a serious condition and is being treated at a private medical facility, as per his close friend, M.N. Karissery.
A medical board has been assembled, and a group of specialists is diligently monitoring the condition of the veteran writer and filmmaker.
“I visited him this morning. He is in intensive care, and his condition is serious. He has been in and out of the hospital recently. His wife and daughter are at his side,” remarked Karissery.
Affectionately known as MT, Nair has been facing health challenges in recent weeks, including breathing difficulties and cardiac issues.
Nair, a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, has made a lasting impact on Malayalam literature and cinema. He has secured four National Film Awards for his screenplays and has directed seven films while contributing to the scripts of approximately 54 films. His screenplays, now published in book form, are seen as essential reading for aspiring filmmakers.
Throughout his career, Nair has received numerous accolades, including the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Vayalar Award, Vallathol Award, Ezhuthachan Award, Mathrubhumi Literary Award, and O.N.V. Literary Award.
In 2013, he was honored with the J.C. Daniel Award for lifetime achievement in Malayalam cinema. In 2022, he was awarded the inaugural Kerala Jyothi Award, the highest civilian honor from the Kerala Government.
Nair was bestowed with the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary accolade, in 1995 for his remarkable contributions to literature. He also acted as the editor of Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekly for several years.
In October of this year, Nair made headlines when gold ornaments were stolen from his home while he and his wife were away. The police later recovered the stolen items, implicating a domestic helper.
