Govardhan (UP), July 5 (NationPress) As the renowned Mudiya Mela is set to commence in Uttar Pradesh's Govardhan this Sunday, local authorities have initiated a cleanliness campaign.
More than 2 crore pilgrims are anticipated to arrive in Govardhan to participate in the mela and perform Parikrama.
The cleanliness drive, spearheaded by District Magistrate C.P. Singh, commenced on Saturday and concentrated on maintaining hygiene in significant areas such as Parikrama Marg, Daanghati temple, and Giriraj ji.
DM Singh personally participated by sweeping the area near the Govardhan temple, promoting the importance of cleanliness.
Following directives from the Uttar Pradesh government, efforts are underway to ensure that pilgrims receive appropriate facilities and a clean environment, he stated.
The District Magistrate noted that the public often uses polythene bags and contributes to litter, showing a lack of care for cleanliness. However, after prior warnings, strict measures will be enforced against offenders.
He emphasized that the responsibility for maintaining cleanliness lies with the temple management, but due to their inadequacies, "our team along with the locals of Govardhan is conducting this cleanliness initiative."
Highlighting the significance of cleanliness, DM Singh remarked, "Our goal is to ensure the entire Parikrama marg is clean."
Notices have also been issued to shops encroaching on public land. The success of this cleanliness campaign has been attributed to the collaborative efforts of Govardhan SDM Neelam Srivastava, Govardhan Tehsil, and the Panchayat.
For those unfamiliar, the Mudiya Mela is celebrated in honor of Sanatan Goswami, the chief disciple of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
According to legend, following the death of Sanatan Goswami, his followers performed parikrama around Govardhan after shaving their heads. This tradition has been upheld ever since.
Importantly, this 468-year-old tradition continues to attract a multitude of devotees.
The pilgrims engage in a 21-km-long Parikrama of Govardhan.
The belief surrounding this yatra is that it brings peace and prosperity to the devotees.
