Srinagar, April 4 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, on Friday accused Omar Abdullah, the current chief minister, of having ‘surrendered before Delhi’. Mehbooba Mufti informed the media that instead of addressing significant issues, the National Conference government led by Omar Abdullah was concentrating on disputes over who holds the authority to transfer officials alongside the Lt Governor.
She charged that the government under Omar Abdullah had capitulated to New Delhi.
“People expected that the new administration would safeguard their rights. Unfortunately, six months have passed without addressing the deteriorating conditions of youth in prisons, the dismissals of employees, or the concerns of daily wage workers and unemployment, demonstrating a lack of courage from the government,” alleged Mehbooba Mufti.
In response to Omar Abdullah's statement that the Jammu and Kashmir administration seeks to avoid conflict with the central government, Mehbooba Mufti remarked that the NC leadership is ‘intimidated’ to even mention the issues for which people elected them.
“When they assumed office, they claimed they did not desire a confrontation with Delhi. No one wants to confront New Delhi. However, you have already submitted. You are scared to even discuss the matters for which the populace voted for you,” she added.
She highlighted that when employees from departments under Omar Abdullah were dismissed, he remained silent.
“Yet today, regarding the transfer of patwaris (revenue officials), the MLAs of his party and its allies convened,” she said, referencing the resolution passed by the NC-led coalition on Friday following the transfers initiated by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.
“Did the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir vote for this party to address these matters? Is the transfer of patwaris a significant concern? Or is it more pressing that our youth languish in jails? Or that there are raids daily? Or that Jamia Masjid remains closed despite improvements? We ignore the real issues while debating who will transfer patwaris and village-level workers. I find this extremely concerning.
“The J&K government bears responsibility because as soon as it came into existence, it surrendered, claiming they did not want any confrontation with Delhi. Setting aside Article 370, they won’t even mention it, nor do they discuss other problems the public faces. They raise concerns about why the LG transferred the patwaris, and question why they cannot do it themselves?
“I believe it is inappropriate for a government that has received such a substantial mandate to convene a large meeting over trivial issues. This is a mockery of the mandate bestowed upon them by the people,” Mehbooba Mufti stated.
