Chennai, June 1 (NationPress) On Sunday, Theni District Collector Ranjith Singh officially initiated the release of water from the Mullaperiyar reservoir at Thekkadi, catering to both irrigation and drinking water needs, as directed by the Tamil Nadu government. This water release signifies the commencement of the irrigation season in the double crop region of Cumbum Valley.
According to the Water Resources Department (WRD), a total of 200 cusecs of water will be released daily for irrigation purposes, while 100 cusecs will be designated for drinking water supply to the residents of Theni district. This provision is expected to last for the next 120 days, subject to the levels of water in the reservoir.
This water release is poised to positively impact around 14,707 acres of agricultural land across the taluks of Theni, Uthamapalayam, and Bodi regions.
