Mumbai: Did DRI Just Seize Drugs Worth Rs 42 Crore?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Nov 2 (NationPress) In an impressive show of force against international drug trafficking, the Mumbai Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) made a significant seizure of 42.34 kg of hydroponic weed, estimated to be worth nearly Rs 42 crore, from two travelers arriving from Bangkok at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, as per official reports.
Following credible intelligence, DRI agents intercepted the two individuals soon after they landed and conducted a thorough examination of their luggage.
During this inspection, officers uncovered 21 food packets filled with noodles, biscuits, and other items that had been ingeniously packed with the illegal substance.
Testing carried out with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) field kit confirmed that the material was indeed hydroponic weed, a premium type of cannabis grown using sophisticated soil-less methods.
The seized contraband, weighing 42.34 kg, was taken under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985, and both individuals were placed under arrest.
Officials noted that these arrests represent a critical step in dismantling the networks responsible for importing such high-value narcotics into India.
This operation follows another significant seizure by DRI Mumbai just two days prior, where officers recovered 4.7 kg of cocaine valued at Rs 47 crore on Friday, leading to the apprehension of five suspects, including carriers, financiers, handlers, and distributors.
In just three days, DRI Mumbai has intercepted drugs worth over Rs 90 crore, highlighting the agency's aggressive efforts against the narcotics trade.
Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the broader international and domestic connections of the syndicate involved in smuggling these drugs into India.
The agency reiterated its commitment to achieving a "Nasha Mukt Bharat" (drug-free India), diligently working to intercept narcotics, dismantle international trafficking networks, and protect the health, safety, and security of the nation.
