Mumbai, Sep 22 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, announced on Monday that the urban landscape of Mumbai is rapidly evolving due to heightened urbanization, leading to longer commutes for residents needing to travel for work.
He emphasized, "In addition to enhancing the public transport system, it is crucial to ensure 'last-mile connectivity' for our citizens," he stated.
The upcoming innovation in transport services is termed 'pod taxi', which is aimed at providing effective 'last mile connectivity' for the public, according to the Chief Minister.
During a meeting to assess the implementation of pod taxis in the 'business district' that spans Kurla to Bandra railway station, he remarked, "Pod taxis will play a pivotal role in the 'Business District' connecting Kurla and Bandra railway station."
He further elaborated, "The forthcoming Bullet train station in the Bandra-Kurla Complex, along with the Mumbai High Court's decision, is anticipated to escalate traffic in this zone. This surge will likely strain the current transport system, complicating travel for residents. In the coming years, pod taxis are expected to offer citizens a timely and efficient means of transport, alleviating traffic congestion."
Additionally, he noted, "A unified card system is being developed in Mumbai, allowing citizens to access all transport services, including pod taxis. The areas around Kurla and Bandra stations should be designed to support pod taxi services. Instead of the police accommodation in the Kurla station vicinity, alternative provisions should be made for the police. Moreover, the structures in the Bandra-Kurla Complex should be interconnected with the station via these pod taxis."
Given the area's commercial significance, the Chief Minister instructed the administration to uphold a world-class service standard.
He also proposed that innovative ideas should be explored to optimize the skywalk outside the station.
Maharashtra's Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, mentioned that pod taxis are compact, automated electric vehicles operating without a driver, providing swift travel.
Each pod taxi can accommodate up to eight seated passengers and an additional thirteen standing passengers.
This transport solution is being tailored for a rapid, sustainable, and traffic-free alternative.
