Kolkata, Nov 18 (NationPress) A joint operation by the Kolkata Police and Delhi Police resulted in the capture of a murder suspect in Kolkata, who had escaped from Tihar Jail, according to officials.
The individual, a notorious gangster from Uttar Pradesh, had been granted parole but failed to return to prison, opting instead to hide in the Topsia locality of the city.
His arrest occurred on Ripon Street in Kolkata, thanks to collaboration between Kolkata Police and the Delhi Police.
The man has been identified as Mohammad Shorab, currently serving a life sentence.
Authorities confirmed he has multiple murder convictions. A senior Kolkata Police official stated, "A request for assistance from the Delhi Police led to a raid in which a 38-year-old named Sohrab was apprehended at a residence on Ripon Street. He originates from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh."
This notorious criminal has also been linked to crimes in Delhi.
He was serving time in Tihar Jail but was granted parole in June of this year.
His parole was set to conclude in July, yet he chose to remain at large.
"He is implicated in approximately 20 criminal cases, including six or seven murder cases, several attempts to murder, and robbery incidents in both Uttar Pradesh and Delhi," the senior officer noted.
According to police reports, Shorab and his two brothers, Salim and Rustam, operated a criminal gang.
They faced numerous charges, including murder and robbery.
In 2005, Shorab was involved in three murders within an hour during the Eid festivities.
He was subsequently arrested for those offenses.
In 2011, Shorab and one of his brothers were apprehended for robbing a gold shop and committing murder in Delhi's Karol Bagh.
A court in Delhi sentenced them both to life imprisonment.
Since that time, Shorab has been held in Tihar Jail.
After a lengthy incarceration, he was granted parole on June 26 this year, citing his wife's health issues.
He was expected to return to prison on July 4 but failed to do so.
Instead, he went into hiding at a relative's home in Topsia, Kolkata, where he assumed a different identity and worked as an app cab driver.
In response to his failure to return, both the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Police established a special investigation team.
