The Census authority in Nagaland has appointed approximately 6,100 enumerators and supervisors ahead of Census 2027, deploying them across the mountainous state to ensure complete, accurate, and inclusive household coverage, officials confirmed on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. The appointments mark a significant administrative mobilisation for what will be India's first census in over a decade.

Key Dates and Phases

Director of Census Operations, Nagaland, Keneilhoutuolie Miachieo, announced that the House Listing Operation (HLO) — the first phase of Census 2027 — will be conducted statewide from 1 July to 30 July 2026. Ahead of the field exercise, citizens can submit their household details online through the Census portal during a self-enumeration window running from 16 June to 30 June 2026.

Awareness Campaign and Media Outreach

Miachieo shared these details at a meeting of the Inter Media Publicity Co-ordination Committee (IMPCC) held in Kohima. A statewide publicity campaign spanning print, radio, television, social media, and broadcasts in local dialects has been planned to drive public participation. The IMPCC will constitute a dedicated team to run a month-long strategic outreach effort, targeting specific communities and countering misinformation around the census exercise.

Notably, messages from the Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, and Home Commissioner are proposed to be broadcast through All India Radio to encourage active participation — a step that underscores the political and administrative weight being placed on achieving accurate enumeration in a state where complex terrain and dispersed settlements have historically posed logistical challenges.

Training and Preparedness

Training programmes for master trainers, field trainers, Principal Census Officers, District Census Officers, Charge Officers, Supervisors, and Enumerators are either completed or currently underway. As of the latest update, 130 field trainers have been trained. Training for 1,010 Supervisors and 5,124 Enumerators is scheduled between 8 June and 25 June 2026.

The State Level Census Coordination Committee (SLCCC), chaired by Home Commissioner Abhijit Sinha, had earlier reviewed the state's preparedness at a meeting held at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima. Officials emphasised that accurate census data is critical for governance, policy formulation, and development planning across the state.

Why This Census Matters

Census 2027 will be India's first full enumeration since the 2011 Census, with the scheduled 2021 exercise having been deferred due to the Covid-19 pandemic. For Nagaland specifically, the data will inform resource allocation, constituency delimitation, and welfare scheme targeting across a state with significant linguistic and demographic diversity. This is the first time self-enumeration via an online portal has been introduced as a formal pre-field phase, reflecting a shift toward digital-first census methodology.
