Assam BJP Chief Confirms Nandita Gorlosa's Exit is Her Own Decision
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 23 (NationPress) In response to Nandita Gorlosa's shift to the Congress party, Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia stated on Monday that he had personally encouraged her to stay with the BJP; however, she opted for a "personal choice" instead.
Saikia reflected on the 2021 Assembly elections, where he promised during the campaign that Gorlosa would receive a ministerial position, pledging to discuss this with the Chief Minister.
“That commitment was honored, and she was appointed as a minister in the cabinet headed by Himanta Biswa Sarma," he remarked.
He noted that due to "altered circumstances," the party was unable to provide her a ticket this time, and the reasons were clearly conveyed to her.
“I had an extensive discussion with her,” Saikia mentioned. “As the state president, I wish for no one to leave the BJP. We are like one family,” he added.
In a notable political shift just before the Assam Assembly elections, state Minister Nandita Gorlosa joined the Congress after not being granted a ticket by the BJP and will now run for the Haflong constituency.
The Congress party officially announced her candidacy earlier in the day, revealing that their previous candidate, party General Secretary Nirmal Langthasa, had stepped down in the “greater public interest” to support Gorlosa.
Gorlosa, the current MLA representing Haflong, changed her allegiance shortly after the BJP nominated first-time candidate Rupali Langthasa for the constituency. This move is seen as politically significant in the Dima Hasao district, where she has cultivated a solid support base over the past five years.
Embracing her into their party, the Congress remarked that Gorlosa has been a consistent advocate for district issues and remained resolute in her political stance. The party also criticized the BJP leadership, asserting that the decision to deny her a ticket reflected priorities misaligned with the needs of indigenous tribal communities.
