Guwahati, March 18 (NationPress) Mira Borthakur, the president of Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress and a prominent party figure, launched a pointed critique of former colleague Pradyut Bordoloi on Wednesday after his resignation from the Congress party. She asserted that his choice to leave stemmed from personal gain rather than any genuine ideological conflicts.
Borthakur shared her views with journalists, stating that Bordoloi had accumulated considerable wealth and assets during his time as a minister in Assam while serving under the Congress administration.
She hinted at possible undisclosed reasons behind his abrupt political switch, suggesting that he might have faced pressure or had “certain files” related to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma influencing his choice.
“Pradyut Bordoloi has built a substantial fortune over time while in power. Now, he has opted to leave Congress at a pivotal juncture, which raises serious doubts about his motivations,” Borthakur remarked, though she did not provide any conclusive evidence to back her claims.
Furthermore, the Congress leader accused Bordoloi of betraying the trust of party members, noting that countless grassroots supporters who stood by him now feel abandoned. “He has departed from the party merely due to disagreements over the selection of a candidate for an Assembly seat. This reflects how personal ambition has overshadowed commitment to party principles,” she pointed out.
Borthakur insisted that the Congress remains cohesive despite such departures, asserting that leaders motivated by self-interest will not undermine the party’s foundation.
In contrast, Bordoloi has yet to publicly counter these accusations.
Earlier that day, Lok Sabha member Pradyut Bordoloi expressed that he was “deeply hurt” and felt he had “no choice” but to resign from the Indian National Congress, citing ongoing humiliation and a lack of support within the party's Assam unit.
After stepping down, he shared with reporters that the decision was painful but unavoidable. “I am saddened to take this step, but I had no other options. I felt mentally distressed and emotionally drained,” he stated, indicating that issues within the party had been escalating for some time.
The seasoned politician claimed that several senior Congress members had “insulted” him repeatedly, leading to feelings of isolation. “I have devoted my entire life to the Congress, yet today I feel utterly alone,” he emphasized, highlighting the emotional strain of his exit.
Simultaneously, Bordoloi acknowledged the significant role that the Congress has played in shaping his political journey. “The Congress party has contributed immensely to my career. Everything I am today is thanks to the Congress,” he remarked, adding that his decision was not a rejection of the party’s legacy but rather a response to the current situation.
However, he asserted that the environment within the Assam Congress had deteriorated to the point where he could no longer continue. “There is no supportive atmosphere in the Assam Congress for me to remain. That is why I resigned,” Bordoloi concluded.
