Pradyut Bordoloi Resigns from Congress, Cites Humiliation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 18 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi revealed on Wednesday that he felt profoundly hurt and had been left with no alternative but to part ways with the Indian National Congress. He cited ongoing humiliation and an unsupportive atmosphere within the party's Assam faction.
While addressing reporters post-resignation, Bordoloi acknowledged that making such a decision was agonizing yet unavoidable. “It grieves me to take this move, but I find myself with no choice. I am psychologically wounded and drained internally,” he expressed, suggesting that the tensions within the party had been accumulating over time.
The seasoned politician alleged that several prominent Congress leaders had subjected him to insults repeatedly, resulting in feelings of isolation.
“I have committed my life to the Congress party, but today I feel utterly abandoned,” he stated, emphasizing the emotional burden of his departure.
Nonetheless, Bordoloi recognized the significant role Congress played in his political journey. “The Congress party has provided me with much. I owe my current self to the Congress,” he remarked, clarifying that his choice was not a dismissal of the party’s legacy but rather a response to the existing circumstances.
He underscored that the situation within the Assam Congress had worsened to a point where he could no longer remain. “There exists no environment within the Assam Congress for me to continue. Hence, I have resigned,” Bordoloi articulated.
This resignation is perceived as a major blow to the Congress in Assam, especially as the party is currently facing internal strife and preparing for critical political contests ahead.
Sources indicate that Bordoloi may be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, with expectations that he will be nominated as the BJP candidate for the prestigious Dispur Assembly constituency—an important seat in the state capital with both strategic and symbolic significance.
In a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday, Bordoloi expressed an overwhelming sense of sorrow while announcing his resignation from all roles, privileges, and responsibilities within the party.
Recently, Bordoloi had also communicated his dissatisfaction with the operations of the Congress party and the state president, Gaurav Gogoi. The central leadership did not respond to Bordoloi's concerns, which may have contributed to his departure from the party.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that if Bordoloi joins the BJP, he will be accorded the respect he deserves, and the Lok Sabha MP will be given a ticket for the upcoming Assembly elections.
