Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi Switches to BJP After Leaving Congress
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) Just a few hours after his departure from the Congress party, Assam's Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi made the leap to join the BJP in the capital on Wednesday.
Bordoloi, who previously served as a minister in Assam under the Congress administration, was welcomed into the BJP by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Dilip Saikia.
Expressing his sentiments, Pradyut Bordoloi conveyed that he felt “deeply hurt” and that his resignation from the Indian National Congress was a last resort due to ongoing humiliation and a lack of support within the Assam unit of the party.
In a statement to reporters, Bordoloi described his decision as painful but necessary. “I am saddened to take this step, but I had no remaining options. I was mentally strained and internally drained,” he remarked, indicating that the issues within the party had been mounting for quite some time.
The seasoned politician alleged that several senior members of Congress had “disrespected” him on numerous occasions, fostering a feeling of isolation.
“I have devoted my entire life to the Congress, yet today I feel utterly alone. I waited for hours to meet K.C. Venugopal, but my request was denied,” he emphasized, highlighting the emotional burden of his departure.
Nevertheless, Bordoloi recognized the significant role the Congress party played in his political journey. “The Congress party has contributed immensely to my career. Whatever I am today, I owe to them,” he stated, adding that his choice was not a dismissal of the party's legacy but rather a response to the current circumstances.
However, he firmly asserted that the environment within the Assam Congress had declined to a point where he felt he could no longer remain. “There is no suitable environment in the Assam Congress for my continued participation. This is why I chose to resign,” Bordoloi concluded.
His departure and switch to the BJP are viewed as a considerable blow to the Congress in Assam, especially as the party faces internal challenges and prepares for significant upcoming political contests.
