Assam CM Claims Congress Lacks Space for Self-Respecting Leaders
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, enthusiastically embraced former Congress member Pradyut Bordoloi as he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), declaring that the historic party no longer accommodates “self-respecting individuals”.
Addressing journalists in the capital shortly after Bordoloi's formal induction, CM Sarma regarded this event as a notable political shift, indicating a growing trend of Congress leaders moving their loyalty.
“I am pleased to welcome Pradyut Bordoloi to the BJP. Currently, there is no room for self-respecting individuals in Congress,” CM Sarma asserted, delivering a pointed critique of the opposition.
The Chief Minister further anticipated that additional senior Congress figures would soon follow suit.
“In the next two years, prominent leaders like Debabrata Saikia and Ripun Bora will likely join the BJP. Many capable Congress leaders will ultimately align with us,” he suggested.
CM Sarma mentioned that the trend of Congress leaders joining the BJP has been ongoing since 2016 and is expected to gain momentum. “In the upcoming days, a substantial group from Congress will transition to the BJP,” he confirmed.
Clarifying Bordoloi’s motivations, the Chief Minister highlighted that the former MP did not join the BJP for personal gain or power. “He has not come here seeking a leadership role or ministerial position. Should he wish to contest elections, we will back him as much as possible,” the CM noted.
Emphasizing Bordoloi’s decision as a selfless act, CM Sarma remarked, “He has not come to acquire anything but has sacrificed significantly. He relinquished a respectable position as a Member of Parliament to join the BJP.”
Bordoloi’s transition is viewed as a significant blow to the Congress party in Assam as political contests loom on the horizon.
Pradyut Bordoloi expressed feeling “deeply hurt” and “left with no choice” but to exit the Indian National Congress, citing ongoing humiliation and an unfavorable atmosphere within the party's Assam faction.
