Srinagar, Feb 14 (NationPress) The 10th National Snow Shoe Championship commenced at the scenic Sonamarg tourist resort in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, featuring 178 athletes from 20 states participating in this prestigious event.
Syed Qamar Sajad, the Director of Tourism (Kashmir), officially launched the championship, signifying a significant winter sports milestone in the region.
This championship has attracted enthusiastic participation, with 178 athletes showcasing their skills, thereby emphasizing the rising popularity of snow sports across India and the potential of the region to emerge as a top winter sports destination.
During the event, the Tourism Director remarked that organizing national-level events like the Snow Shoe Championship not only encourages adventure and winter tourism but also provides a robust platform for young talents to shine.
He noted that such events are crucial for enhancing the local economy and positioning Jammu and Kashmir prominently on both national and international tourism maps.
Officials from various sports organizations, local authorities, coaches, and sports enthusiasts attended the event. Participants lauded the breathtaking beauty and challenging snow terrain of Sonamarg, deeming it an ideal location for snow sports competitions.
This championship is anticipated to significantly boost winter tourism and inspire more individuals to engage in adventure sports throughout the Union Territory.
Winter sports have gained traction in Sonamarg, especially after the transformation of the resort into an all-weather tourist destination through the tunnel at Gagangir on the Srinagar-Ladakh highway.
The Sonamarg tunnel, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 13, 2025, spans 6.5 kilometers, connecting Gagangir and Sonamarg.
This tunnel includes two lanes of the national highway and circumvents a Z-shaped road stretch known for being avalanche-prone and frequently obstructed by heavy snowfall during winter months.
With this tunnel, Sonamarg now enjoys all-weather connectivity, allowing travelers to traverse the 6.5-kilometer distance in just 15 minutes, as opposed to the hours required over the previous winding road.
