Did Ajit Pawar Plan a Merger Before His Untimely Death?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, January 30 (NationPress) The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Sharad Pawar, announced on Friday that discussions regarding a merger with the faction previously led by the late Ajit Pawar have reached a conclusive stage, pending a formal declaration. However, the NCP is still grappling with the profound grief caused by Ajit Pawar's unexpected passing in a plane accident and has chosen not to disclose further information on the subject.
On the heels of confirmations from NCP-SP state president Shashikant Shinde and senior MLA Jayant Patil about the merger talks, senior party figure Eknath Khadse revealed that negotiations have been ongoing for approximately three to four months.
“It was nearly settled that the merger would transpire. There was a plan in place for an announcement,” Khadse stated.
Former Home Minister and NCP-SP leader Anil Deshmukh held a press conference in Nagpur, asserting, “Ajit Pawar desired for the merger to occur. Meetings were also conducted by Jayant Patil… After the municipal corporation elections, we will reach a decision. Both factions must unify as per Ajit Dada’s wish. This was his final desire, and actions should be taken accordingly.”
Former minister and NCP-SP leader Rajesh Tope remarked that the merger decision was made in the presence of Ajit Pawar. “We are witnesses to it. Only the announcement was pending, which was meant to occur after the Zilla Parishad elections,” Tope noted. However, NCP leaders have refrained from commenting on the merger.
NCP state president Sunil Tatkare informed journalists that the current priority is selecting the legislative party leader, with no further discussions on the merger at this time.
Similarly, NCP minister Chhagan Bhujbal stated that the focus is now on electing the deputy CM. “I am uncertain about any other matters,” he mentioned.
At present, both factions of the NCP have joined forces to contest the ongoing elections for 12 zilla parishads and 125 panchayat samitis across the state.
Ajit Pawar had engaged in extensive campaigning for the zilla parishad elections, tragically passing away on Wednesday in a plane crash in Baramati, where he was scheduled to speak at four rallies.
Earlier, senior NCP SP leader Ankush Kakade shared a heartfelt recollection of Ajit Pawar’s last wish to reconcile the two factions.
Kakade disclosed that Ajit Pawar hoped to reunite the factions by December 12 (Sharad Pawar’s birthday) as a “gift” to the senior Pawar.
Despite ongoing discussions, the merger did not materialize as anticipated.
Kakade recounted that Ajit Pawar had implored him and other senior leaders, including Vitthal Sheth Maniar and Srinivas Patil, who share a close connection with Sharad Pawar, to aid in reconciliation. He reportedly urged, “You maintain good relations with Saheb (Sharad Pawar); please speak with him. Endeavor to explore how both NCP factions can reunite.”
