Hyderabad, Feb 4 (NationPress) The National Commission for Women has set up an inquiry committee to investigate the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl during the recent Sammakka Saralamma Jatara festival held in Medaram, located in the Mulugu district of Telangana.
The Commission has acknowledged reports that have emerged in the media as well as on social media regarding this alleged incident.
According to some media outlets, the incident allegedly involved a gang rape allegedly perpetrated by five youths from Chhattisgarh, as stated by the National Commission for Women (NCW).
Taking the situation seriously, Vijaya Rahatkar, chairperson of the NCW, has formed this inquiry committee to investigate the reported incident.
The inquiry committee will be led by Delina Khongdup, a member of the NCW, with Kanchan Khattar, Senior Coordinator of NCW, also serving as a member of the committee.
Proceedings of the inquiry will begin on February 5. The committee may also receive assistance from an advocate appointed by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of Mulugu.
The committee has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, evaluating the actions taken by relevant authorities, engaging with pertinent officials and individuals to gather facts, and recommending measures to avert the recurrence of such incidents. The findings and recommendations will be submitted to the Commission for further action, as stated by the NCW.
The Commission reaffirmed its steadfast dedication to protecting the rights, dignity, and safety of women and minors, pledging to closely monitor the situation based on the inquiry committee's findings.
Thousands of worshippers attended the Sammakka Saralamma Jatara, which took place in Medaram from January 28 to 31.
This biennial celebration, recognized as the largest tribal fair in Asia, attracted devotees from various states, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and beyond.
The government of Telangana had arranged extensive preparations for the event, with officials asserting that the celebration proceeded without any reported disturbances.
