AIADMK MP Appeals to NCW Amid Rising Crimes Against Minors in Tamil Nadu
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 12 (NationPress) In a significant development, Rajya Sabha MP and leader of the AIADMK, I.S. Inbadurai, has reached out to the National Commission for Women (NCW) to address what he termed an alarming increase in crimes against young girls in Tamil Nadu.
In his comprehensive letter to the NCW Chairperson, he outlined a series of grave incidents occurring across the state, urging for immediate measures to secure justice for the victims and hold responsible parties accountable.
The MP voiced his apprehension that the current scenario reflects a disturbing failure in law enforcement and a breakdown of the system designed to safeguard vulnerable children.
Among the cases highlighted was the tragic murder of a Plus Two student in Thoothukudi on March 11. The victim’s parents had sought police protection after facing threats, yet their requests were reportedly disregarded.
Inbadurai mentioned that the inaction on the complaint might have led to the unfortunate incident and called upon the NCW to investigate the alleged negligence of the police involved.
Another alarming case he referenced occurred in Madurantakam, where a 14-year-old girl was reportedly gang-raped in daylight. He expressed deep concern that such incidents demonstrate a growing trend of lawlessness, emphasizing the necessity for a prompt investigation under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Additionally, he pointed to the disturbing case of a two-and-a-half-year-old toddler in Krishnagiri, who was allegedly sexually assaulted and killed. The MP noted the arrest of a local political figure linked to this case, raising fears of possible interference in the investigation.
In his correspondence, Inbadurai also criticized what he described as an administrative void within the Tamil Nadu Police, suggesting that the lack of a permanent Director General of Police (DGP) may be hindering command and accountability.
The MP urged the NCW to take suo motu cognizance of these troubling incidents, deploy a high-level fact-finding team to the affected areas, assess pending petitions for police protection for women and minors, and advocate for the appointment of a regular DGP to bolster law enforcement in the state.
He reiterated the importance of prioritizing the safety of women and children, calling on the Commission to exercise its authority to ensure accountability and to avert further crimes against young girls in Tamil Nadu.
