Hyderabad, Feb 5 (NationPress) A preliminary investigation by the National Commission for Women (NCW) has determined that there was no gang-rape incident involving a minor during the recent Sammakka Saralamma Jatara. The inquiry committee set up by the NCW arrived in the Mulugu district of Telangana on Thursday afternoon.

The committee, led by NCW member Delina Khongdup, met with Collector T. S. Divakara and Superintendent of Police Ramnath Kekan at the Mulugu Collectorate.

They subsequently examined the area surrounding the Medaram Jatara, where the alleged gang rape was rumored to have occurred.

It has been confirmed that no gang rape incident took place during the Jatara.

The inquiry team will present its final findings to the National Commission for Women after obtaining a formal report from the local police.

The Commission had formed the inquiry committee following reports circulating in both traditional and social media regarding the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl at the tribal fair.

Some media outlets claimed that the incident involved allegations of gang rape supposedly perpetrated by five youths from Chhattisgarh.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, taking this matter seriously, appointed the committee to look into the allegations.

Chaired by NCW member Khongdup, the committee also includes senior coordinator Kanchan Khattar.

Additionally, it was stated that the committee might receive support from an advocate appointed by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Mulugu.

The committee's mandate includes investigating the events leading up to the alleged incident, evaluating the actions taken by relevant authorities, engaging with officials and individuals to gather facts, and recommending preventive measures against future incidents. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations to the Commission for suitable action, as per NCW.

Thousands of devotees participated in the Sammakka Saralamma Jatara held in Medaram from January 28 to 31, which is recognized as the largest tribal fair in Asia, attracting visitors from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and beyond.

Point of View

I believe it's essential to uphold the integrity of reporting while acknowledging the serious nature of the allegations. The NCW's findings bring relief to many, but vigilance remains crucial in safeguarding our communities. Transparency in investigations promotes trust and accountability.
