NCW to Present Findings on Anna University Assault Case to Central Government

Chennai, Dec 31 (NationPress) The National Commission for Women (NCW) is preparing to submit a comprehensive report to the Government of India concerning the sexual assault case that unfolded at Anna University. NCW member Mamta Kumari and her team concluded a thorough two-day investigation into the incident that took place on December 23.
In statements made to journalists at Chennai airport, Mamta Kumari remarked, “We explored every part of Anna University and conducted an exhaustive inquiry. We met with the victim and her family to collect all pertinent information. Additionally, we consulted with the Governor of Tamil Nadu regarding the situation.”
She further stated, “A detailed report of the investigation will be forwarded to the central government via the NCW. Anyone found culpable will face severe consequences. It is alarming that the accused, despite having over 20 cases against him, was allowed to remain at large.”
Mamta Kumari also raised concerns, asking, “Why did the government not take earlier action? The central government is committed to ensuring stringent measures against individuals who perpetrate crimes against women.”
She expressed her belief that justice would prevail and that the guilty parties would be held accountable.
The case involves a second-year engineering student from Anna University who was sexually assaulted on the campus grounds. The assault occurred while the victim and her male companion were seated after attending a midnight Christmas mass at a nearby church.
As per police reports, the accused assaulted the male companion violently before dragging the female student into nearby bushes, where the assault took place. The assailant, identified as Gnanasekaran, a street vendor of biryani, was apprehended promptly following the victim's report to law enforcement.
In the aftermath of the assault, the Tamil Nadu BJP claimed that Gnanasekaran had ties to the student branch of the ruling DMK. State BJP President K. Annamalai condemned the DMK government for the worsening law and order in Tamil Nadu, staging a dramatic protest outside his home in Coimbatore, where he flogged himself six times to symbolize the eradication of evil.
Annamalai also declared a 48-day fast and plans to visit all six holy sites of Lord Murugan as part of his protest. He criticized the police for leaking the FIR in the sexual assault case, claiming it compromised the identity of the 19-year-old victim, an engineering student at Anna University.
He alleged that Gnanasekaran was not listed as a known troublemaker by the Tamil Nadu police despite his involvement in multiple cases, attributing this to the accused's connections with DMK leaders.
The Tamil Nadu BJP Chief, a former IPS officer, asserted that Gnanasekaran was affiliated with the DMK and presented evidence to support his claim. He further accused the DMK of attempting to distract from the declining law and order situation in Tamil Nadu by fabricating a narrative regarding a North-South divide.
