NCW Investigative Team Arrives in Chennai to Examine Anna University Sexual Assault Incident

Chennai, Dec 30 (NationPress) The two-member investigative team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) arrived in Chennai on Sunday to look into the purported sexual assault of a 19-year-old student at Anna University.
On Saturday (December 28), NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar established the committee to explore the matter and propose necessary actions.
The committee comprises Mamta Kumari, a member of the NCW, and Praveen Dixit, a retired IPS officer and former Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra, who also serves as a Special Rapporteur for Maharashtra and Goa at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Praveen Dixit arrived in Chennai on an Indigo flight from Pune while Mamta Kumari traveled from Kolkata on the same airline.
The committee's mandate includes investigating the case, reviewing the events leading up to the incident, and evaluating the responses from authorities, as stated in their announcement.
Additionally, the team will meet with relevant officials, the victim, her family, friends, and various NGOs to gather information and suggest strategies to avert similar incidents in the future.
The Commission has taken suo moto cognizance of the alleged sexual assault involving a student at Anna University.
A notice has already been issued to the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) concerning this incident.
Furthermore, on Saturday, the Madras High Court mandated the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) composed of three IPS officers to probe the alleged sexual assault case at Anna University.
According to Chennai Police, a second-year student was reportedly sexually assaulted on the university campus on Monday night.
One individual has been apprehended in connection with this incident.
In her complaint filed with the police on December 23, the student claimed that an unidentified man had threatened and assaulted her while she was conversing with a friend on campus around 8 p.m. on Monday.
Following the complaint, a case was registered at the Kotturpuram All Women Police Station, and an investigation is currently in progress.
The Chennai Police faced criticism for disclosing the details of the FIR on their website, including the identity of the rape survivor. A bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and V. Lakshminarayanan ordered the Tamil Nadu government to provide an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the victim.
