New Delhi, May 30 (NationPress) The renowned National Defence Academy (NDA) celebrated a historic milestone on Friday as it hosted the Passing Out Parade (POP) for its 148th Course in Pune. For the very first time, the graduation included women cadets.
A total of 17 female cadets marched confidently alongside their male peers, signifying a pivotal moment in the NDA’s commitment to nurturing the nation’s military leadership.
The event was honored by the presence of Mizoram Governor and former Army Chief, General Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), who received a Guard of Honour and served as the Reviewing Officer.
In his address, General Singh commended this historic achievement, remarking, “This signifies a crucial milestone in our collective journey toward enhanced inclusivity and empowerment. These young women represent a lasting symbol of Nari Shakti, embodying not only women’s development but also women-led progress. I foresee a future, not too far away, when one of these remarkable women might ascend to the highest ranks of the service they join.”
He further applauded the overall performance of the cadets, adding, “It was a spectacular display by the cadets. Being here is a privilege for me. What is striking about the NDA is that while nothing has fundamentally changed, everything has evolved. Core values remain intact while adapting to modernity. Today, 17 women cadets graduated, and they blended seamlessly with their counterparts. This integration showcases the academy's commitment to transformation in line with contemporary times.”
In a heartfelt tribute to the evolving landscape of military education, a special magazine edition titled 'Breaking Barriers: Female Cadets' was launched by General Singh during the ceremony. This edition chronicles the journey, obstacles, and triumphs of the inaugural batch of women cadets at the NDA.
Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh, who also addressed the press, stressed the structural evolution within the academy.
“This publication is an additional initiative to document the transformation that accommodates women cadets. It highlights their journey and challenges. Initially, they were segregated, but now they are fully integrated. Every aspect, from training to academics, has been made gender-neutral and progressive.”
“Every detail has been executed with precision, which is evident. The fact that there was no noticeable difference during the parade speaks volumes. This lays the groundwork, and the stronger the foundation, the more robust the structure that will rise upon it,” he continued.
A ceremonial photo session captured the first-ever female cadets to graduate from the NDA, standing as symbols of a more inclusive future in national defense.
