NEC sanctions ₹13.58 crore for Meghalaya healthcare, education and infra
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned more than ₹13.58 crore for a range of development projects across Meghalaya during May and June 2025, spanning healthcare, education, road infrastructure, renewable energy and community development, officials confirmed on Wednesday, 15 July. The funding has been approved under the Schemes of the North Eastern Council (SoNEC), with the stated aim of strengthening infrastructure and advancing balanced socio-economic growth in the state.
Healthcare Boost for Garo Hills
Among the headline approvals is the installation of a 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system at Tura Civil Hospital. The project is designed to bring advanced diagnostic capability to patients from the Garo Hills region and surrounding areas, reducing the need for referrals to hospitals outside Meghalaya. Access to MRI facilities has historically been limited in this belt, making the investment a significant step for tertiary healthcare in the region.
Education and Technical Training
In the education sector, the NEC has extended financial support for infrastructure upgrades at Shillong Polytechnic. Separately, funds have been approved to establish a multidisciplinary training-cum-resource centre under the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCORMS), aimed at promoting technical training, research and innovation across the Northeast.
Cultural Heritage and Market Infrastructure
The council has also sanctioned funds for preserving Meghalaya's cultural heritage, including the development of the Seng Khasi Cultural Complex and the Seinraij Jowai Community Hall. Infrastructure at the historic Iewduh Market in Shillong — one of the oldest and largest markets in the Northeast — will be upgraded to improve amenities for traders, farmers and consumers, according to an official statement.
Renewable Energy Surveys and Airport Connectivity
On the energy front, the NEC has approved funding for surveys and detailed investigations related to the proposed Mawblei, Myntdu Leshka Stage-II and Selim hydroelectric projects, which are expected to bolster Meghalaya's future renewable energy capacity. The council also noted the completion of the Shillong-Umroi Airport Road improvement project in June 2025, with officials stating the upgraded corridor will ease airport access and support tourism, trade and broader economic activity in the region.
Wider Northeast Funding
Beyond Meghalaya-specific projects, the NEC released ₹18.93 crore to universities, regional institutions, technical institutes, non-governmental organisations and societies across the Northeast for research, academic and community initiatives — including programmes organised in Meghalaya. This comes as the Centre continues to prioritise infrastructure parity between the Northeast and the rest of India, a policy thrust that has gained momentum over the past decade. With multiple projects now approved and one connectivity project already completed, the focus shifts to timely execution on the ground.
