Shillong, May 19 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, announced on Monday that prioritizing the education sector has been a key focus of the state government. Several initiatives have been implemented to enhance the educational infrastructure across the hilly region.
He stated, "Our administration places the utmost importance on health and education. We are committed to providing superior educational opportunities for our youth and children, and our efforts are directed towards achieving this goal."
On Monday, Sangma visited the Shillong Government College of Engineering, which has received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to launch undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering for the academic year 2025-26.
Accompanied by officials from the Education Department and Shillong Polytechnic College, the Chief Minister evaluated the college's infrastructure and engaged with faculty members to gauge their needs. He assured that all issues will be resolved to enhance the facilities necessary for the operationalization of the Shillong Government College of Engineering as per AICTE guidelines. Faculty from Shillong Polytechnic College also informed the Chief Minister about funding for research in the Science and Technology domain, which he agreed to support.
Currently, the Chief Minister's Research Fellowship (CMRF) finances research in the fields of arts and culture, with plans to extend it to include Science and Technology research.
The Shillong Government College of Engineering stands as the first government engineering institution in the state. The Letter of Approval (LoA) was issued to the Principal Secretary of Education on April 30. Situated at Mawlai Kynton Massar in the East Khasi Hills district, it is affiliated with the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). The two undergraduate programs, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering, will commence with an initial enrollment of 30 students each for the 2025-26 academic year. Additionally, the Chief Minister visited the historic Iewduh market—commonly referred to as Bara Bazar—one of the oldest and largest traditional marketplaces in the Northeast.
Sangma remarked, "The narrow lanes have transformed into flowing drains due to the absence of a proper drainage system. This visit has provided me with a clearer understanding of the everyday challenges faced by our residents, particularly during the monsoon season." Already, the government has allocated Rs 6 crore for ongoing renovation efforts, which include restoring footpaths and basic infrastructure. An additional Rs 15 crore will soon be designated for a comprehensive overhaul of the market, encompassing improved drainage, pedestrian pathways, sanitation, and enhanced facilities for both traders and commuters.
"Our objective is to revitalize Shillong’s market hub, Iewduh—the lifeblood of our farmers and traders—by delivering the essential infrastructure and amenities to enhance commuting, trading, and daily living for everyone," the Chief Minister emphasized.
