NEET-UG 2026 retest: Pradhan urges 22 lakh students to appear without fear
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on 21 June 2026 urged over 22 lakh students to sit for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination without fear, hours before the high-stakes retest began across the country following an alleged paper leak that had thrown the medical entrance process into turmoil.
Minister's Message to Students
Addressing reporters in New Delhi, Pradhan expressed confidence in the examination machinery. 'Today, the re-examination is going to be held. I have full faith in the National Testing Agency (NTA), all state governments, district administrations, India's education system, and especially the students,' he said.
He directly addressed the aspirants: 'Nearly 22 lakh students will soon sit for the NEET exam. Sit without fear, without worry. You will surely do well. My best wishes to all students. The students have faith in India's system; I hope this unwavering trust continues.'
Sharp Warning Against Disruption
Pradhan also issued a pointed warning to those he accused of attempting to unsettle students on the eve of the examination. 'Do not make it a joke. Let us not do anything that impacts children's mental health. In a few hours, children are going to take their exam. I mention this because yesterday, some so-called responsible people in India acted with ill intent and wrong motives towards children,' he said.
He appealed directly: 'If you consider yourselves responsible and true citizens of India, if you represent the people of India, please take responsibility. Do not add to the troubles of India's children.' The remarks were widely read as a rebuke aimed at opposition politicians who had raised concerns about the conduct of the retest.
CBSE Class 12 Re-evaluation Results Ready
Separately, Pradhan announced that the re-evaluation and re-verification results of approximately 15.5 lakh students who had applied for a review of their CBSE Class 12 board exam scores are ready and will be published shortly. 'The work is almost complete; the CBSE will publish the re-verified marks soon. We won't allow any errors to happen,' he said.
NTA Entry Guidelines for Exam Day
The NTA issued practical instructions for candidates via a post on X, specifying that entry at examination centres would begin at 11:00 AM, with the last entry permitted at 1:30 PM. Students were required to carry their admit card, a valid photo ID, and two passport-size photographs. The agency also advised candidates to avoid prohibited items, stay hydrated, and account for traffic by arriving early.
Context: Why the Retest Was Called
The NEET-UG 2026 re-examination was necessitated by an alleged paper leak that cast doubt over the integrity of the original test. The controversy had triggered widespread protests and political pressure, making the retest one of the most closely watched examination events of the year. This is not the first time NEET has faced integrity questions — the 2024 edition saw similar allegations that led to legal proceedings and a Supreme Court review, underlining systemic vulnerabilities in India's centralised medical entrance framework.
With results and admissions to hundreds of medical colleges hinging on today's outcome, the pressure on the NTA to deliver a clean, controversy-free examination has rarely been higher.
