NEET-UG 2026 retest: Pradhan warns 'irresponsible' actors as 22 lakh students set to appear
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on 21 June issued a sharp public warning to unnamed individuals he described as 'so-called responsible people,' urging them not to jeopardise the futures of students ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for Sunday. With nearly 22 lakh aspirants across the country set to sit the high-stakes medical entrance test, Pradhan's remarks signalled deepening concern over perceived attempts to destabilise the process.
Pradhan's Warning to Unnamed Actors
Addressing reporters in New Delhi, the Education Minister stopped short of naming anyone but left little ambiguity about his intent. 'As an individual and as a social worker, I request — please do not play with the future of India's new generation,' he said.
Pradhan went further, referencing events from the previous day. 'Do not make it a joke. Let us not do anything that impacts children's mental health. In a few hours, children are going to take their exam. I mention this because yesterday, some so-called responsible people in India acted with ill intent and wrong motives towards children,' he stated.
He concluded his appeal with a direct address: 'I earnestly appeal to them — if you consider yourselves responsible and true citizens of India, if you represent the people of India, please take responsibility. Do not add to the troubles of India's children.'
Minister Expresses Full Faith in NTA and the System
Despite the charged atmosphere, Pradhan said he retains complete confidence in the National Testing Agency (NTA), all state governments, district administrations, and India's broader education system. He reserved particular praise for the students themselves.
'Nearly 22 lakh students will soon sit for the NEET exam. Sit without fear, without worry. You will surely do well. My best wishes to all students. The students have faith in India's system; I hope this unwavering trust continues,' he added.
This comes amid heightened scrutiny of the NTA following controversies in previous NEET cycles, making the minister's public endorsement of the agency a pointed signal of institutional backing ahead of the retest.
CBSE Re-evaluation Results Also Imminent
In a separate announcement, Pradhan confirmed that re-evaluation results for more than 15 lakh students who had applied for re-checking of their CBSE Class 12 board exam marks are nearly ready. 'The work is almost complete; the CBSE will publish the re-verified marks soon. We won't allow any errors to happen. I am ensuring this today,' he said.
NTA Issues Exam Day Instructions
The NTA, in a post on X, outlined entry timings for candidates at examination centres. Entry was set to begin at 11:00 AM, with the last permitted entry at 1:30 PM, after which no candidate would be allowed inside.
The agency reminded aspirants to carry their admit card, a valid photo ID, and two passport-size photographs. Candidates were also advised against bringing any prohibited items and were urged to stay hydrated, account for traffic, and arrive early at their designated centres.
What Comes Next
With the re-examination underway, attention will now shift to the conduct of the test and the integrity of the results process. Any fresh irregularities would intensify political and judicial scrutiny of the NTA, which has faced calls for structural reform. The CBSE re-evaluation results, expected shortly, will also be closely watched by lakhs of students whose university admissions hinge on those marks.
