Jammu, Feb 17 (NationPress) The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, has appointed Shantmanu, a former senior IAS officer, as the new State Election Commissioner for the Union Territory, according to official sources.

An announcement from Lok Bhawan stated, "In accordance with the powers granted by Sub-Section (3) of Section 36 of the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, the Lieutenant Governor has appointed Shantmanu, IAS (retd.), as State Election Commissioner for Jammu and Kashmir under the specified Act."

Shantmanu will serve in this capacity for a duration of five years or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever occurs first.

The order specifies, "The appointment of the State Election Commissioner will commence from the date Shantmanu officially takes charge. Further details regarding the terms and conditions of his appointment will be issued by the government later," as noted in the statement from L-G Sinha.

Shantmanu concluded his tenure as the Financial Commissioner (Additional Chief Secretary) of Jammu and Kashmir on December 31, 2025.

Previously, B.R. Sharma, an IAS officer from the 1984 batch, was appointed as the State Election Commissioner but retired from service on April 30, 2020.
