Kolkata, March 19 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has recently announced the assignment of six additional Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers from West Bengal as central poll observers in various states preparing for elections.

Among the selected officers, two hold the title of departmental secretaries. All six have been appointed to observe the electoral process in Tamil Nadu, which is also gearing up for elections next month, similar to West Bengal.

The newly appointed IAS officers for Tamil Nadu include Preeti Goel (2013 batch), Siyad N (2014 batch), Arvind Kumar Meena (2010 batch), Rani A. Ayesha (2009 batch), P. Ulaganathan (2006 batch), and Shama Parveen (2013 batch).

These officers have been tasked with observing elections across different districts in Tamil Nadu. Ulaganathan and Shama are serving as secretaries within the state government.

Ulaganathan heads the Panchayat Affairs and Rural Development Department and also oversees the Electronics Testing and Standards Department under the Information Technology and Electronics Department.

Meanwhile, Shama serves as the Secretary of the North Bengal Development Department and additionally holds the position of Principal Secretary of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), as stated by a member of the party's state committee.

On the previous day, the ECI had also appointed two additional departmental secretaries as central observers in other states.

One of these officials is Priyanka Singla, a 2012-batch IAS officer from West Bengal, currently serving as the Special Secretary in the Civil Defence and Disaster Management Department. The other is P. Mohangandhi, a 2004-batch IAS officer from West Bengal, who is currently the Secretary of the state Commerce and Industries Department.

Earlier on Thursday, West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed another letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, expressing her concerns regarding the extensive transfer and deployment of bureaucrats and police officers from the state since the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.

She further accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of unlawfully undermining the authority of the elected state government.

Point of View

The deployment of IAS officers as central poll observers by the ECI exemplifies the delicate balance between maintaining electoral integrity and the autonomy of state governments. This action, while aimed at ensuring fair elections, raises legitimate concerns regarding the central authority's role in state affairs.
