Kolkata, March 18 (NationPress) On Wednesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the deployment of two Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers from the West Bengal cadre as central observers in other states. Both officers hold the rank of departmental secretaries.

One of the officers, Priyanka Singla, is a 2012 IAS officer currently serving as Special Secretary in the Civil Defence and Disaster Management Department of West Bengal.

The other officer, P. Mohangandhi, is a 2004 IAS officer who currently serves as Secretary in the state's Commerce and Industries Department.

Earlier in the day, the ECI also decided to assign Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary Antara Acharya and Food Processing Secretary Parvez Ahmed Siddique as central observers for other states preparing for elections.

However, both Siddique and Acharya requested the ECI to reconsider their assignments due to heavy administrative responsibilities in their respective departments.

On March 17, the then West Bengal Home Secretary, Jagdish Prasad Meena, was removed from his position by the ECI just hours after the announcement of two-phase elections in the state. He was subsequently transferred to Tamil Nadu as a central poll observer.

The Commission also dismissed the then Chief Secretary of West Bengal, Nandini Chakrabarty, on the same night the polling dates were revealed, prohibiting her from participating in the election process in the state.

Dushyant Nariala took over Chakrabarty's role, while Shanghamitra Ghosh succeeded Meena. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee voiced strong objections to the dismissals of both Chakrabarty and Meena, addressing her concerns to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The two-phase elections in West Bengal are scheduled for April 23 and April 29, with results to be declared on May 4.

Point of View
