Former West Bengal Home Secretary Meena Assigned as Poll Observer in Tamil Nadu
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 17 (NationPress) Jagdish Prasad Meena, the former Home Secretary of West Bengal, has been reassigned by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to Tamil Nadu as a central election observer. This decision comes just hours after the ECI announced a two-phase election schedule for the state, leading to Meena's removal from his position.
Interestingly, on the same day, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, remarked that Meena's removal was insufficient; he should also be transferred out of West Bengal until the elections conclude and results are declared.
The ECI's choice to appoint Meena as an observer in Tamil Nadu emerged shortly after Adhikari's comments. An insider from the Chief Electoral Officer's office in West Bengal confirmed, “The Commission had previously requested that the West Bengal government release Meena for a central observer role in another state. However, the state government objected, citing potential administrative issues. With Meena no longer serving as Home Secretary, there are no obstacles to his reassignment.”
This raises questions about whether the ECI might adopt a similar approach with other bureaucrats and Indian Police Service officers who have also been dismissed in recent days.
In addition to Meena, the ECI has also dismissed Nandini Chakraborty, the former Chief Secretary of West Bengal. The ECI clarified that neither Chakraborty nor Meena would partake in any election-related activities.
Furthermore, the ECI removed Peeyush Pandey, the former Director General of Police, along with Supratim Sarkar, the Commissioner of Kolkata Police, and Vineet Goyal, the Director General of Law & Order.
On Monday night, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, expressing her discontent regarding the abrupt removal of these officials without prior consultation with the state administration.
