New Delhi, June 2 (NationPress) The NHRC has requested a report from the West Bengal government and police regarding the well-being of Sharmistha Panoli, a jailed law student and content creator, within 10 days. This inquiry raises questions about the legality of her arrest.
NHRC Member Priyank Kanoongo informed IANS, “We have issued a notice to both the Chief Secretary and the police chief following complaints about potential irregularities in the arrest procedures involving Panoli, including her transit remand.”
Kanoongo emphasized, “We expect the report to be submitted within a span of 10 days.”
The 22-year-old was detained on Saturday in Gurugram, Haryana, by Kolkata Police for sharing videos with communal remarks during Operation Sindoor.
Prominent Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut voiced her support for Panoli’s immediate release, deeming her arrest related to a now-deleted social media post as 'unwarranted'.
Kangana, recognized for portraying strong female characters, expressed concern over the negative impact on the influencer's career due to her detention by Kolkata Police.
“No girl or daughter should endure such authoritative behavior,” Ranaut stated while addressing the media during an event in Delhi.
Directing criticism at the Trinamool government of West Bengal, the National Award-winning actress and BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh remarked, “I urge the West Bengal government not to turn the state into another North Korea.”
“Every citizen is entitled to their democratic rights. If she made an objectionable remark, she later apologized. It appears she made her comment in a general context. Young people today often use such phrases,” she argued strongly for Sharmistha’s release.
Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also extended his support to Sharmistha, urging the West Bengal Police to act fairly.
As sympathy for the arrested influencer grows, the Kolkata Police sought to clarify the 'misleading narrative' concerning their actions and her controversial social media posts.
In a statement on social media platform X, the Kolkata Police defended their actions, asserting they adhered to legal protocols.
“Hate speech and abusive language should not be misinterpreted as freedom of expression as guaranteed by Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution,” stated the police.
“The individual was not arrested for expressing patriotism or personal beliefs; legal actions were taken due to the dissemination of offensive content that incites hatred among communities,” they concluded.
