NIA sources have identified the suspect as Thangminlar Mate, also known as Lenin Mate, who hails from the Tengnoupal district. He was apprehended on Sunday in Silchar, a town in southern Assam, sharing a border with Manipur.
It remains unclear whether Mate has any affiliations with militant organizations.
Reports indicate that the attack took place on January 17 of the previous year, leading to the fatality of one member of the Manipur Police.
Additionally, two other police officers sustained serious injuries during the incident.
The Silchar court has granted the NIA transit remand custody of the arrested individual, marking him as the first suspect detained in this case, now set to be presented before the agency's Special Court in Guwahati.
The NIA continues its investigation into this matter.
Authorities from the Manipur Police previously stated that on January 17, 2024, armed militants executed a fierce assault on state forces, employing firearms and explosives in Moreh, Tengnoupal district.
In this violent episode, a member of the 6th Manipur Rifles, Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei, lost his life while on duty, and three other police personnel were injured.
Following the initial assault, police officials reported that a gunfight ensued in various areas of Moreh as security forces, primarily comprising Manipur police commandos, initiated a large-scale search operation for those responsible for the attack on the police camp near the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Moreh.
Situated along the India-Myanmar border, Moreh is predominantly inhabited by the Kuki-Zo community within the Tengnoupal district.
The Integrated Check Post (ICP) in Moreh, located roughly 110 km from Imphal, serves as the largest trading route between India and Myanmar.
