New Delhi/Imphal, Aug 1 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has successfully apprehended a second suspect in the 2024 homicides in Jiribam, Manipur, as reported by sources from the central investigative agency on Friday.
The NIA announced that they detained Lalrosang Hmar, also known as Rosang, a resident of Moinathol Village located in southern Assam’s Cachar district, in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, on Thursday.
This arrest follows the capture of another primary suspect, Thanglienlal Hmar, by a collaborative team from the NIA and Assam police on the same day, also in Aizawl.
On November 11 of last year, militants abducted and viciously murdered three women and three children in the Borebekra region of Jiribam district. The victims' remains were subsequently disposed of in the Barak River. Like Thanglienlal, Lalrosang was a key conspirator in this atrocious act.
The NIA has recovered a mobile phone along with a SIM card from Lalrosang. The agency has taken over the investigation from the Borebekra police in Manipur and is actively pursuing the case.
The victims, whose bodies were discovered on various dates in November last year from the Barak River along the Manipur-Assam border, were part of the non-tribal Meitei community. Additionally, two other civilians from the same community were killed, and numerous homes were set ablaze during the attack.
The incident on November 11, 2024, incited extensive violence across multiple districts in Manipur, including Jiribam, which shares a border with southern Assam.
Earlier this month, the Manipur High Court instructed the NIA to provide a comprehensive progress report regarding the Jiribam killings.
A bench comprised of Chief Justice Kempaiah Somashekar and Justice Ahanthem Bimol Singh issued this directive after considering a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) submitted by one Soram Tekendrajit.
